Kivalani McMurrin, APRN PMHNP-BC
She/They
If you've ever felt like you had to shrink your story to fit into a fifteen-minute appointment, or left a provider's office with a prescription but not many answers, you're in the right place. Kivalani came to psychiatry by way of her own journey, years of doing the hard internal work before realizing that helping others do the same was exactly what she was meant to do. Identifying as neurodivergent herself, she equally loves to dig into the fine details and examine the full picture at the same time, and stays genuinely curious about what's really driving what you're experiencing, not just what's showing up on the surface. She trusts that you are the expert in your own experience.
Kivalani's approach is integrative and trauma-informed. That means before anything else, she's asking why. What's happening in your nervous system, your history, your body, your life? From there, she builds something that actually fits you, which might include medication management, but doesn't have to. She's equally comfortable exploring nutritional and lifestyle strategies, supplementation, nervous system regulation, and trauma-focused therapy through the Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM). She's also completing the Psychiatry Redefined Functional Psychiatry Fellowship, which keeps her practice grounded in where the science is actually heading.
Kivalani works with patients of all backgrounds and presentations, truly, no one is turned away and complexity is embraced. That said, she has a particular passion for neurodivergent folks, LGBTQIA+ individuals, women and AFAB people, children and adolescents (ages 6+), and those navigating perinatal or antepartum mental health. She frequently works with ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, PTSD and CPTSD, PMDD, OCD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, body dysmorphia, and mild to moderate eating disorders. She has a soft spot for patients who've carried a diagnosis for years that never quite felt right. If that's you, she'd love to take a fresh look together.
When not obsessing over work, Kivalani is new to Portland and fully committed to spreading her roots. Most of her free time goes toward sampling all the food Portland has to offer, wandering neighborhoods she hasn't explored yet, making lists of all the must-do hikes, and actively talking herself out of adopting a dog.
